The Roy Wood Jr.: Lonely Flowers comedy special premieres on Hulu Friday, January 17th. Produced by Jax Media, Trailblazer’s audio post team was called in by show director c. Craig Patterson to provide the sound mix. Trailblazer previously worked with c. Craig on his short film Fathead which won the best student short film award at The American Pavilion’s Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at Cannes in 2023 and we’re also working on his current animated film ChikaBoom!
The Lonely Flowers Special was filmed live at the historic Lincoln Theater in Washington DC. Trailblazer’s SVP of Sound, Eric Johnson, attended the performance in order to experience the show with the audience allowing him to supervise the final mix to ensure that it was an accurate representation of the Lincoln Theater experience. The production sound team went to great lengths to capture not only the sound of Roy Wood Jr’s performance, but also to capture the sound of the audience and Roy’s voice in the theater. To capture the immersive experience, there were 14 microphones placed throughout the theater including two ceiling microphones mounted 25 feet above the audience in addition to Roy’s handheld microphone. Roy also had a wireless lavalier microphone that was used to capture a hilarious backstage bit as he walked off the stage at the end of the performance.
Trailblazer’s Sr. Mixer, Willie Elias Rivera, created several versions of the mix including the 5.1 surround and stereo versions required by Hulu as well as a Dolby Atmos mix for a truly immersive experience and for potential future use.
